IMFH | FAQ

1. What is the Institute for Maternal-Fetal Health (IMFH)?

IMFH is a combined effort of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of Southern California and the Department of Pediatrics and Pediatric Surgery at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. It provides comprehensive care for the mother and her unborn child when a complication is suspected. Specialists from all areas of medicine who provide care to the fetus and newborn baby are participants at IMFH. These professionals meet regularly to plan the care for families who have come to IMFH for assistance.

2. Is IMFH the only place of its kind providing special services in Southern California?

There are many outstanding doctors throughout Southern California. However, IMFH is the only place where specialists from every area of medicine who provide care to the fetus and newborn are united in one group. Top specialists in all fields, recognized nationally and internationally, meet with families before birth to provide the most current and accurate information available regarding the diagnosis and treatment options. In addition, our specialists meet regularly with one another to plan and coordinate your care. Specialty areas include perinatology, obstetrics, neonatology, pediatrics, fetal therapy, cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, radiology, general surgery, urology, craniofacial surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, genetics, epidemiology, teratology, psychology and family support. Throughout your visit to IMFH, our nurse care manager will help arrange and coordinate your care.

3. What affiliations does IMFH have?

IMFH is affiliated with Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center has joined with the IMFH to help establish the CHLA-USC IMFH Fetal Therapy Program, the only program of its kind in Los Angeles.

4. What kinds of patients do the physicians at IMFH see?

IMFH provides medical care and counseling for the mother and her child in utero when there is a suspected complication. Because of the collaboration of specialists in every area of fetal and newborn medicine, IMFH is able to offer comprehensive care for virtually every fetal condition. Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists from the USC Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine care for mothers with a variety of medical conditions. The USC Perinatal Group has offices throughout the Los Angeles area.
